Who should do this course?

Existing unemployed carpen try construction workers who require their existing skills to be recognized within this qualification.

What does the course cover?

The course covers the skills necessary to work on a construction site as a quali- fied carpenter in the residential or commercial sector.

What units do I need to complete?

To complete this qualification participants will be required to complete 19 core units and 11 electives. There are six theory units and the remainder are practical tasks.

What are the entry requirements?

Substantial skills in carpentry as well as language and literacy skills outlined below.

What are the language a nd literacy skills required?

Medium level of mathematical skill equivalent to year 10. Medium to high command of English. All candidates w ill be required to undertake a phone interview prior to enrolling. Candidates will be required to be assessed at enrol- ment stage. Recognition of prior learning/competencies As a RTO we recognize that you may have skills and competencies that align with the learning criteria of this qualification. This course is designed to be undertaken through RPL. However, you may need to undertake training in the theory subjects depending on your existi ng skills. If you have completed other units of competencies from another qualification, these may be used to provide you with credits for this qualification pr ovided they align with the learning outcomes. What are the career prospects?

Graduates of the certificate III in carpentry will gain recognition as a qualified carpenter. This qualification can also lead to the certificate IV and diploma in building and construction. You may also be eligible for a contractors license as a carpenter depending on the requirements of the relevant licensing authority.

What other qualifications does the Certificate III in carpentry lead to?

Certificate IV in building and construction and/or diploma in building and construction

What are the time restrictions?

You must complete the course within three years.

What are the assessment requirements?

In order to complete the certificate, y ou may need to complete short answer questions, case studies, fi nal exams and completion of third party reports for the theory units . These units can be done on-line or correspondence mode. You will also be required to be assessed at the workplace or at our skills centre by a qualified industry assessor for the practical units . This assessment should take 5 days full time You may need to obtain the services of a person with qualifications as an assessor, justice of the peace or professional to supervise any exams for the theory units. This cost is not included in the course fees. Alternatively you may complete exams at our offices in Belrose, Sydney.

Do I need access to a workplace to complete this qualification?

No. The practical subjects area require assessments to be done at the workplace such as a construction site . Alternately you may be able to be assessed at our skills centre open ing up in August September this year. It is envisaged that it will be located in Auburn, Sydney.

How is this qualification facilitated?

The first six units are done in distance mode or on-line with the remaining units trained and assessed at the workplace or skills centre. You will be advised of the dates for the practical assessments.
